The face is the place of individuality, where emotions are expressed, and the eyes, which are defined as the mirror of the soul, create subtle connections with other beings. The mask, on an archetypal level, is an ensemble of behaviour and postures that we more or less voluntarily construct to relate in society.
With the series Mask, Britta Dietsche orientates her research on the construction of the gaze toward a more intimate level. Mask is constituted by twelve variations on a picture of a beautiful woman, staring toward someone situated in front of the surface of the painting. This visual effect creates the impression of a direct contact with the spectator.
